Trump or Clinton? How a transition of power can make your chapter stronger

by BNI New Zealand

The media is firmly focused on the United States at the moment and the very exciting Presidential race. Many people feel both Trump and Clinton are poor candidates and are calling for a third term for Obama. Of course there can be no third term for an American president – there must be a transition of power. There is a great strength in bringing in a new leader and the renewal and energy that this transition creates.

Leadership

Here at BNI New Zealand, all of our chapters have recently changed their leadership teams. Changes in leadership are a great time to refocus on your chapter’s goals. As a chapter think about these questions:

  1. Where can you build momentum?
  2. What are the challenges your chapter faces?
  3. What are your goals for referrals, revenue and culture?

Recently BNI produced an interesting article relating to goals: Chapter Goal Setting for Leadership Teams: One Size Does Not Fit All This article noted that as a leadership team, one of the most important functions you will execute throughout your term is setting and tracking goals for your chapter. Three goals to set for chapters that are looking to be successful are:

  1. Revenue and Referral Goals. These can be set by individual members, and this is a powerful exercise that allows members to see with their real numbers what’s possible in BNI. Make sure members have a true Revenue and Referral Goal that includes how much money they want to make and how many referrals it will take for them to get there.
  2. Building the Winning Team. This goal is focused on chapter growth and building the team that will help all your members reach their goals. Each chapter will win the most by selecting the right professions or industries to join, which will serve to accelerate referrals. Be strategic with who you invite and who you ask to join.
  3. Create the Culture. This is a fun way to recognize and encourage the behaviours that help everyone reach their goals, and that serve to establish a thriving chapter culture. Member-by-member, celebrate the behaviours you want to see increase in the chapter. When everyone takes notice of what’s expected, your culture will flourish.

One chapter that has had huge success through goal setting is BNI Britomart. Outgoing president Janine Barr notes that one of their keys to success has been carefully choosing members to ensure they are the right fit for the chapter’s dynamic. This has led to a strong alignment around values and a great desire to practise Givers Gain.

Recently they were able to present a cheque for over $30,000 to Mercy Hospice. The whole chapter has benefitted from an increase in visitors, one to ones and Thank You for Closed Business. Fantastic successes all round, for the chapter, the members and for hospice too!

So what are you waiting for? Let’s set some goals for this next stage in your chapter’s development!
