Who has heard of The Power of One? No, not the Bryce Courtenay book, but how the power of the individual BNI member taking responsibility for simple actions ensures the success of the whole chapter, including their own membership.
It’s a well-worn saying, perhaps wrongly credited to Albert Einstein, that “the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results”.
Sometimes this saying is used wrongly to encourage people to change for change’s sake. In fact, if you are doing the same correct action repeatedly and getting the same successful result, changing that action, for the sake of it, is also insanity. What you need to do occasionally, is check that the same action is valid and will continue to be valid.
Ivan Misner says “Do six things a thousand times, not a thousand things six times. Success comes from being like a dog with a bone”
Discipline reinforcing habit is critical to success regardless of whether it’s in business, wellness, sport, or something as simple as remembering to thank an employee or your partner every day.
In BNI we know after over thirty years of validation that doing 5 simple things regularly will almost guarantee individual success for any member in BNI. If ALL the members do these 5 simple things regularly, it pretty much guarantees the success of the chapter and all the members in it.
These 5 simple things and the required regularity of them is.
1. Attend 1 BNI meeting each week
2. Make 1 qualified referral every week
3. Have 1 “better than good” 1-2-1 each week
4. Bring 1 visitor to the meeting each month
5. Complete 1 Chapter Education Unit (CEU) each week
The power of one is a powerful concept, however it takes everyone to achieve it for it to work. Don’t sit back and let another member overachieve for you!
