A picture paints more than 60 seconds ….

by BNI New Zealand

Giving a great 60-second presentation is a constant challenge for many members. It’s important that your presentation is memorable and also specific. Don’t be too general and all-encompassing in your speech; make sure that you have a concise key point relating to your business that you want to get over to the audience.

Planning is very important – best not to wing it during your presentation; put the effort in beforehand so your speech is clear and structured. The key to getting referrals is to educate people on how to refer you – and make sure they remember what you have taught them.

One way to make your 60 second presentation memorable is to use visual aids. Using props or well-thought out visuals can help to make your presentation stand out amongst the group.

For example, you may be a mechanic who wants to discuss the importance of servicing your vehicle and the issues or problems that can arise from not doing correct maintenance on certain car parts. One way to illustrate this vividly is to actually bring some of these parts to a meeting. There’s no better way to show the dangers of worn brake pads up or other issues than by holding up an object that indicates this problem – messy but effective!

Alternatively, if you are a web or graphic designer, members will expect to see examples of your work. Pulling out your mobile device and presenting your recent designs for clients will be a far more effective way of demonstrating your business than simply discussing your work. Visuals convey a powerful message about your ideas and your brand, so it’s essential to use them in the right way.

Keep your use of visual aids simple. Slides or props should focus on one idea or concept. This allows everyone to grasp quickly what you want to communicate. If you use text, keep it to a bare minimum, and where you can use an image to convey a message rather than words.

You may have a strong message to deliver week after week but visual aids are an excellent way to mix up your presentations and get your message across to the audience. There’s nothing like a concrete example of your product to sell your business and give your audience a true reflection of what you are offering.
