Helping people makes you more interesting (not that you aren’t, of course)

by Colin Kennedy

Marketing is all about visibility. The more visibility you have, the more business you will do.

People like to do business with people they know, like and trust and, in the words of entrepreneur Jack Daly:

“Selling is the transfer of trust. People do business with people they trust, and they get to trust the people the get to know… and they get to know the people they SEE more frequently”.

So even Jack agrees… be seen, be heard – with your existing customers, your target market and, of course, your BNI.

I don’t have to tell you, though, that it’s no use jumping up and down saying: “look at me! look at me!”

You have to have a reason to ‘show up’, to ‘engage’ or at the very least it will be a struggle to be taken seriously.

One way to facilitate good engagement is to add value to your ‘audience’ by drawing on your experience, skills and knowledge to share tips, advice and stories that can help a person or organisation make better decisions about business or life.

Here are three things you can do to be more relevant and engaging:

1. Be sure of your positioning (how you want to be perceived i.e. “the experts in pest control” (Rentokil);

2. Provide useful advice (“If you travel frequently, here’s how to avoid bed bugs”);

3. Tell your audience why you love what you do.
