Some people have a high profile in their chapters because of their personality, their wit or their humour, while others give heaps of referrals and grab some limelight that way – but how good is your profile?
I believe that by lifting your profile in your chapter you may enjoy more success – and you don’t have to be loud to do it.
Here are three tips to lift your chapter profile:
- Make sure you get around and greet most people before the meeting, during the coffee break and afterwards.
- Develop a cause. Perhaps you feel strongly about something, and constantly beating the drum about it will help define you. For example, the financial adviser in my chapter feels the Kiwi love affair with property is unhealthy – and he lets us know about it and endlessly educates us on the need to diversify investments.
- Invent a catchy or humorous memory hook. It’s not too difficult and you can even get the chapter help you compose it – that ought to raise profile. For example, as a copywriter I often use the hook: “A picture may be worth a thousand words, but a few well chosen words will paint a picture”.
Many, many BNI members forego the memory hook tool. I’m not sure if it’s because they feel it’s ‘uncool’, ‘too hard’ or of ‘no use’. But I assure you, it can be invaluable, particularly if you get chapter participation.
Once you’ve used it a lot, encourage the chapter to participate by cupping your hand to your ear and letting the chapter complete the memory hook for you – to test if they were listening.
How ever you raise your profile, remember your success at BNI is as much about marketing within your chapter, as it is with out.

Great post – love your ‘hook’! (can’t agree with your financial adviser, but then, I am in real estate lol)
