Show your best with your 60 seconds

by BNI New Zealand

Do you know what the Feldenkrais Method is?

Neither did Alan Cameron’s fellow BNI Harbour City members until he delivered his 60 seconds. He used his presentation to introduce his business and discuss how this method increases self-awareness through movement – providing an effective long-term solution to a range of physical ills.

As we know the heart of the BNI meeting is the “60 Second Speech” slot. This is your opportunity to tell everyone at the meeting all about your business, the kind of leads you’re looking for and anything at all that will help the other members generate business for you.

At member training sessions you get to learn to develop your 60 seconds; introducing techniques such as the memory hook and effective ways to ensure that your messaging is remembered.

Working on your 60 Seconds each week, has immense practical benefits outside BNI. In real-life networking situations you’re trained to be able to give an instant and concise account of what you do.

As a lecturer, Alan was used to speaking publically but he found the 60 seconds to be a completely different sort of challenge. Over time he realised that not only was it an excellent way to introduce his business – which is in a niche field – but also a good method for him to get greater clarity on what it is that he does in his business.

Being a new year, now’s the time to take a fresh approach to your 60 seconds. This is especially true if you have been delivering the same 60 seconds for the last year or so. Refresh your presentation and think about taking a new angle on it. Think about incorporating these questions into your 60 seconds:

  • What are my business goals?
  • What sort of new clients am I looking for?
  • What new initiatives am I rolling out in terms of goods and services?

There’s lots of opportunity to put something new into your 60 seconds.

Also remember the 5 section structure of the 60 seconds:

Section 1 – Introduction (15 seconds) Section 2 – Focus Area (15 seconds) Section 3 – Story / Testimonial (15 seconds) Section 4 – Call for Action (10 seconds) Section 5 – Memory Hook (5 seconds)

Keep things positive; be clear when asking for referrals and get feedback on your 60 seconds. This is your big moment to present your business every week at BNI – make the most of it and you’ll soon see the results!
