People Hate to Fish!

by Clive Murphy

There’s a saying: “Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and feed him for life.”
Great wisdom. It’s my mission with helping people – teach them how to help themselves.
While the saying is great, the big problem is, most people don’t want to learn how to fish.
Sure, while they want to be fed for life, the cold hard reality is they are not interested in learning how to do that.
They simply want the fish – all wrapped up, cooked and ready to eat.
Some don’t even want to go and get it. They want it all served up in front of them so all they have to do is eat.
You may even relate to this.
When people consult with me and I explain I am going to give them skills and strategies on how to help themselves, many say “You haven’t got a magic pill I can take to give me all that!”
Easy. No work involved. Simply swallow the pill and all is fixed.
At a recent seminar, the presenter said “If you have the ingredients to put into a serum on how to make people happy, let me know and we will go into production and make an absolute fortune”.
This scenario applies to how you feel, your health, what you do and it even applies to business. People want you to do it for them.
So, …
Why Do We Want a Quick Fix?
There are many reasons:
The problem appears too hard to fix – and it may not be able to be fixed. Think of the time and money I would waste if I gave it a go and it didn’t work.
I don’t know where to start.
I don’t have time. I don’t have the time to seek answers, implement them and then practice them.
I don’t know how to do it. What if I mess up and get it wrong?
All of these can be solved by someone doing it for you. It’s easy – and you know you get the desired result.
As an example, think of feeling depressed. You can either learn how to fix it so you don’t feel depressed (and this will help you in the future) or you can go to the doctor and get an anti-depressant.
The first solution is an unknown quantity in that it may take hours, days, weeks or even years to fix – and can cost you a lot of money (depending on the help you get). Alternatively, you can take some pills and the problem may disappear in between one and ten days. There is a doctor’s fee plus the cost of the medication.
One is easy (the pill); the other appears difficult (learning).
What If Learning Was Easy?
What if learning gave you near instant results and was fun?
Would this be worth investigating?
Most of my clients receive useable help within the consultation hour. In the second session, as well as learning new strategies, we revise what has been learnt and reinforce the changes that have been made. This provides repetition which will serve the client longer.
Many report back that they have continued to practice their new skills with great results. Others come back six months or longer after their last consultation and say they can’t remember what we covered – which is why they are back as their problems often require the same solution they learnt previously.
My Message …
Find a way of learning how to do something that is going to give you long-term results. Find someone who already has the solution in place and are getting great results.
Make learning fun so you want to continue learning.
The pill will give you a short-term fix. Problem is, you need to continue to take the pill to achieve that fix as the pill does not deal with the cause of the problem.
Learning to fix the problem helps you change your life for the long term.
To me, this certainly appears to be the easier way.
