What Every Small Business Needs to know about Google Reviews

by Richard Foulkes

Does anyone here use Google to find the services of a business? Of course, everyone does. Does anyone go a bit further and check the Google reviews?

You aren’t alone. More than 60% of customers check Google reviews before choosing which business to use. Electricians, dentists, chiropractors, plumbers and any businesses commonly searched for online – prospects all want to check out the experience others have had with you before they commit to you.

Why Google Reviews Matter

• They raise the profile of your business online. People are more likely to visit your website or your business if they see good reviews.

• They are beneficial for search engine optimisation. If Google sees that you have lots of good reviews, your website will be ranked higher in search engine results.

• The star rating based on your average rating appears under your company name in your Google Business Profile. If you have 4 or 5 stars, this will result in more people clicking on your business listing.

• They allow you to receive essential feedback on your company. Respond to any negative reviews promptly, politely and with empathy.

• You need a lot of positive reviews to lessen the impact on your google ranking of a single negative review • Good reviews improve brand trust. People trust Google, so they trust reviews found on your Google Business Profile.

How to Enable Google Reviews

1.Claim. Create a Business Profile or manage an existing profile on Search and Maps.

2.Personalise. Add hours, photos, and other details and get discovered by customers near you.

3.Manage.

Seek Reviews from Customers

Waiting for reviews is a risky strategy. Customers are usually only driven to write a review if they have had a bad experience.

The first thing to focus on is providing excellent service so that you have happy customers. Then ask customers if they would mind leaving you a review on Google. This can be done by email or text or included in invoices sent from your accounting system. It’s a good idea to include a link to your business profile to make it easier for customers.

Ask for Reviews from Your Chapter

•We can provide reviews for each other in the chapter.

•These should only be given if we have a genuine and positive experience with each other’s businesses.

•Fake reviews are disingenuous and risk sanctions from Google.

Summary

A referral by a BNI Member to a prospective client of your business is a very powerful recommendation.

But if they aren’t referred by a BNI Member and are looking online, positive reviews are essential for your business’s credibility.
