Who for art thou, TYFCB?
This is a Quiz about who records TYFCB for whom in some unusual situations. I’ll give you the situation and then we can have quick discussion about what we think the answer is.
Question 1:
Michael is a member of a chapter. He refers you to John, a non-member, who starts doing business with you. You thank Michael for the TYFCB for the business you are doing with John. To strengthen your relationship further, you invite John to the chapter. John becomes a member of the chapter. He continues to do business with you. Who do you know thank for the TYFCB? Michael or John?
Answer:
In theory, the answer is Michael, who is the original referrer and created the relationship. In practice, you would probably feel the relationship is with John and thank him. Neither is wrong The main thing is the TYFCB gets recorded.
Question 2:
You “join the dots” between Ben, a member in our chapter, and Belinda in another chapter. They become referral partners. Who should they thank for the TYFCB?
Answer:
In theory they would both thank you. But in practice, they would likely thank each other as the relationship would grow between them. Again, neither is wrong, the main thing is that the TYFCB gets recorded.
Question 3:
Abdullah, a friend of yours refers you to Neha, a BNI member in another chapter. Neha becomes a constant referrer to you. Who should you thank for the TYFCB – Neha? Or not at all as Abdullah has never been a BNI member or visitor to BNI?
Answer: In theory, you wouldn’t record TYFCB as the business hasn’t come because of your BNI membership. In practice, you would probably thank Neha as a recognition of the relationship you have developed. Again, neither is wrong, but the preference is that the TYFCB gets recorded.
Question 4:
5 years ago, Pierre, a member of our chapter referred themselves to Hank, the real estate agent in our chapter. Hank sold Pierre’s property and did a great job of selling a difficult property. As a result, Pierre goes on to sell more properties in the same apartment complex. Hank left the chapter 3 years ago and his employee Fiona joins. Pierre continues to sell more properties in the complex. Who does Hank thank for the TYFCB?
Answer:
In theory Hank would thank the ex-member Pierre, but in practice it’s likely he would thank Fiona as there is still a relationship with Pierre through her. Again, neither is wrong, the main thing is that the TYFCB gets recorded.
Question 5:
Fiona stops working for Pierre but starts her own business and joins under her business in the same classification. Hank continues to sell more properties in the complex. Who does Hank thank for the TYFCB? The ex-member Pierre, or Fiona?
Answer:
In theory Hank would thank the ex-member. Continuing to thank Fiona is stretching it a bit too far as she has had nothing to do with generating the business, but it is likely Hank would keep thanking her out of habit. Again, the main thing is that the TYFCB gets recorded as all the properties were sold as a result of Hank’s BNI membership.
Summary
TYFCB can be generated in unusual ways.
The important thing is that it gets recorded, to recognise the contribution a member is making to the chapter and to show how the chapter is generating business for its members.
