Welsh BNI director aims to row the Atlantic

by BNI New Zealand

Guy Griffiths — Executive Director of BNI South Wales – is attempting to row 2,600 miles across the Atlantic Ocean with a team of 14 other men and women, to break the existing Guinness World Record of 33 days.

Guy is undertaking the adventure to raise £1,000,000 for Touch Trust and the BNI-Misner Charitable Foundation, and also raise awareness of the fantastic work being done by both organisations.

To support Guy’s record breaking attempt, people and companies are welcome to purchase an advert on their “Million Dollar Home Page” concept website (the web page will be online for a minimum of three years and participants will have themselves and/or their companies publicised during any follow up talks and promotions), or they can simply send an encouraging comment.

Guy says the venture has cost him around GBP 15,000 so far, which he is hoping to recoup with speaking engagements.

“To follow us, or to leave a message, or to get videos and photos, people are welcome to visit www.woodvale-works.com or www.oceanicaspirations.comwhich is my website where people can advertise their companies and/or themselves.”

Guy says the Trade Winds have extended further north than usual.

“A band approximately 3,000 miles wide has established, meaning we can row a thumb line to Barbados! This alone will save us two days’ rowing (180 miles). I am hopeful that we will smash the present Blue Riband record of 33 days and achieve the first sub-30 day crossing! Given these exceptional conditions, if we achieve our goal it is a record that will hold for a while.

“We are working well together as a team and rowing strongly to achieve 4 knots against light winds (and without the assistance of the wind and waves where we could expect to surf at up to 15 knots at times! Hairy!). The present record was established with an average speed of 3+ knots,” says Guy.

The team here in New Zealand wish Guy and his crew all the best for their adventure.
