Samuel Gibson on his Cook Strait Crossing

My relationship with BNI began last year when I was given the opportunity to attend the Big Breakfast fundraising events in Hawkes Bay and Christchurch and share some of my story. Both events raised a large amount of money for Cranford Hospice in Hastings and Nurse Maude Hospice in Christchurch, so to be able to play a small part in both was a privilege.

These speaking engagements have enabled me to meet a huge number of BNI members for the first time. My story resonated with small business owners as I also have my own small business which owns the design of a wheelchair I have helped to develop and which is now exported around the world. I believe in finding your passion and doing everything you can to realise your goals, business owners are often in the same boat; working hard to overcome challenges and realise their hopes and dreams.

Speaking of boats, a passion of mine and a dream I have long held has recently been achieved, in part because of the support of BNI members. Being in a wheelchair, I never thought that sailing would be something I could get involved with. Five years ago all of that changed when I had the chance to sail in a specially modified dingy. I can’t describe the feeling I had sailing on the open water, but it quickly became something I was deeply passionate about.

Soon after I began sailing I set myself the goal of crossing the Cook Strait in a single seat dingy. I shared my dream with the guys I sail with in the Hawkes Bay and we decided the challenge would be one that we could achieve as a group. Our sailing group began fundraising for the event and this is where BNI came in.

I contacted Graham Southwell, National Director of BNI NZ, as well as Fred Lewis, BNI Director Consultant for Hawkes Bay. They put the word out to members that we were looking for accommodation. They worked hard to provide us with options for us, which was hugely appreciated.

We eventually made our crossing and the trip was all the sweeter for the support and encouragement we had from BNI members in the Hawkes Bay and throughout the country. I am sure the relationship with BNI that began last year in Hawkes Bay and Christchurch will continue (watch this space for the next adventure!). Crossing the Cook Strait was the realisation of a dream and yet another example of how – with the help of your network – you can go further than you imagined possible. Your dreams really can come to life.
