• Diego Saez Ibarzabal, member of BNI Positively Wellington, is an experienced architect and highly qualified Lighting Designer with a true passion for light.
• He has a notable ability to create exceptional living spaces in domestic, commercial and industrial situations through his tailored and inspired lighting solutions.
• His business, Inlucem, provides an exceptional combination of architecture and lighting design; a platform where common sense meets superior design.

I moved to New Zealand in 2010 and have part of the BNI Positively family in Wellington for the past 2 years. Before I came to New Zealand I worked in Spain for 5 years as an architect. The importance of good lighting is in my blood, as my father ran a lighting and electrical company. I discovered the incredible ability light had to influence any space and as an Architect I always took that into account.

When I came to New Zealand I worked full-time as an independent lighting consultant. After completing my Masters, I realised there was a gap between the designing process and end users. I now try to fill that gap by making people aware of the importance of lighting and looking after the light you live and work by. It’s an amazing tool, that has a massive influence in our lives. With light you can create incredible living spaces.

I’m passionate about what I do and think this passion translates to my work and to when I present my 60 seconds at BNI.

I consult with clients on all sorts of spaces including work on restaurants and houses. Recently I have been in the media discussing the importance of lighting in the external world (outside the home for example) Subtlety, reflection and texture are all key components in illuminating exterior spaces. Soon I’ll have an article out talking about the importance of lighting in our interior environment.

What we do

Fundamentally my company and I try to put the right light in the right location; helping our clients to make the right decision. Our clients are after a light fitting to suit a specific room or an entire lighting system to enhance their home or improve their work environment. They may need a complete lighting project to make their home a nicer place to live in or just a few new lights to create a relaxing ambience in their lounge.

We also provide advice in outdoor lighting systems to allow our clients to enjoy their gardens and decks to the fullest. Businesses come to us to illuminate their shop windows to catch a potential customer’s attention and draw them inside. Because appropriate lighting can positively influence staff’s productivity and dramatically reduce the running cost of a business, our work with businesses has increased a lot over time.

The importance of passion for BNI members

Showing my passion is the most important thing in my profession. Believe in what you do – that would be my key message to other BNI members. Of course, we are all in business to make money, but this isn’t the focus. We really try to make our clients’ lives better. Also:

1. Working with enthusiasm and true passion makes you an excellent collaborator to other professionals you work with.

2. Put your knowledge and expertise to the complete service of a project’s best result.

3. Try to make things easy for your clients. For example, we deliver a complete set of architectural plans together with detailed lighting specifications, so people can easily understand our suggestions and for the professionals involved on the installation to perfectly work with.

Success comes from how you combine your passion, talent, gained knowledge and expertise with your client’s dreams and motivational expectations.
