Leadership, vision and passion will make your chapter great

by Colin Kennedy

“If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there.” The quote is popularly attributed to the Alice in Wonderland books, although it does not appear in those pages. Regardless, however, there’s truth in it.

If you, the leadership team, doesn’t know where you’re going, how will your chapter get anywhere?

All a tired chapter (in fact, any chapter) needs is a leadership team with vision – and by that I don’t necessarily mean bludgeoning your chapter into shape with compliance.

Of course compliance – the basics of BNI – are critical, but compliance will come easier when your chapter is inspired by vision and enthusiasm.

“Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality.” — Warren Bennis

“Where there is no vision, the people perish.” — Proverbs 29:18

“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” — John Maxwell

As you get underway with this leadership term, ask yourself this:

  1. Do you have a vision for your chapter? It could be as simple as to ‘have a lot of fun’
  2. Have you shared that vision with your chapter? A special ten minute session is good for this
  3. Do you remind the chapter regularly of your vision? Posters, activities and special chapter sessions are good for this.
  4. Do you have a planned set of actions?
  5. A tangible outcome at the end?
  6. Is the whole leadership team on board with the vision?
  7. Does your chapter hold motivation or inspirational sessions that gets everybody excited?

Napoleon Bonaparte said “A leader is a dealer in hope”.

If you give your chapter direction, hope and inspiration… if you take the bull by the horns and take action with vision, enthusiasm and inspiration – your chapter will follow.
