Is the view through your windshield taking you where you want to go in your life?

The View Through Your Windshield

There’s a reason your windshield is larger than your rear-view mirror: it’s important to have the clearest view possible of where you’re going.

As a result, your windshield is substantially larger than your rear-view mirrors. Now, don’t get me wrong, it’s important to know what’s behind you, to learn from where you’ve been and to look out for anything overtaking you.

But we can’t always be looking behind us, back to the “good old days” like pre-Covid times or become fixed on something in the past like things that happened during Covid – at some point we must move forward and be looking through our windscreen to the future.

Sometimes in life, we do need to reverse up a little bit. However, as soon as possible, we need to put that car in drive and move forward to our intended destination.

Where Are We Going?

Some people, lots of people, work hard and have a fast-paced life, they’re always busy but they don’t set life goals – some don’t even set business goals. In our driving analogy, most of these people are lost. They’re lost because they don’t know where they want to end up. Going faster won’t get you there quicker if you don’t know where you’re going.

If we don’t have an intended destination, the view out through our windscreen can only be where we are aimlessly heading.

How Do We Get There?

When driving, if we have an intended destination(s) we should have a map or an app to take us where we intend to go. That’s our roadmap.

Sometimes we must take an alternate route because of heavy traffic or accidents along the way.

Sometimes the weather is so bad that we need our windscreen wipers to help clear our windshield. Other times we need even more help than that.

Sometimes we may need help to get where we’re going. It may be our life partner, a business associate, or a mentor who helps us see more clearly in business or life. BNI can also help us navigate to our destination.

Fluffy Dice

Don’t let objects like fluffy dice obstruct your view out of your windshield. There will be people in life that will get in the way of where you’re heading. Don’t let them.

There will be people who want you to stop, or they might want to keep you from looking forward. Don’t let them do that either. Keep the windshield of your life as uncluttered as you keep the windshield of your car.

Summary

Your rear-view mirror is to see what is behind you. What you already passed and what is in the past.

With the crazy times that we live in, it’s more important than ever to remember that your windshield is larger than your rear-view mirror for a good reason.

From this moment forward, know that it is the view out your windshield that will take you where you want to go in life.
