Often it’s during the toughest times that you realise how much support there is out in the community and how many good people there are to help you through. In August 2014 my older brother Michael passed away due to a brain tumour. The support our family received from Hospice Waikato before and after Michael passed away was touching.
Our family has been very active in BNI, with myself and two other family members in BNI Cambridge. We found the other BNI participants were enormously supportive of our family throughout Michael’s two year battle. When he passed away they also wanted to give back to Hospice in some way.
Hospice Waikato is a Charitable Trust and reliant on donations and community assistance to enable it to provide this support. After Michael’s death I hatched a plan to put on an event to support Hospice and celebrate the important work that they do. With the invaluable support of Steve Haggie and the Cambridge Golf Club, on 30th November 2014 we put on a golf tournament to raise funds for Hospice.
The event was an enormous success also thanks to our many sponsors. Such was the generousity of these businesses that every participant in the tournament received a prize the value of which was more than their entry fee!
We also ran an auction on the day for a prize donated by various people including Tony Brownet. Tony’s wife had recently passed away in the care of Hospice and he also wanted to support the charity in a big way. Tony donated a prize for the auction of a 2 week stay in Port Douglas.
Bids came fast and when all was said and done we were able to present a cheque to Hospice for $7,000. This large amount indicates the community support for Hospice and also how BNI is such a phenomenal support system. To be able to give back in memory of my brother in this way was enormously satisfying especially considering how much Hospice has supported our family.
I would like to personally thank all the BNI members, sponsors and other community members that have supported Hospice and my family.
