Glen Mattingley recently picked up an award for his business and credits a big part of his success to his four years in BNI Gold Coast. This is his story:

Recently my business NZHL Paraparaumu picked up a significant award. Being the 5th time we have scooped up the Top Branch of the Year Award, I would like to acknowledge the value that BNI has brought to the business. Also to thank my chapter for their continued support and encouragement – my team really appreciates it.

The business is based in Kapiti Coast but we work with clients in Wellington city, Hutt Valley, Porirua and through to Levin. NZHL is a franchise company owned by Kiwi Group Holdings (who also own Kiwibank), which has 79 franchises nationwide.

A big part of our success is down to my four years in BNI Gold Coast. Not just the referrals we have received but also the support of my fellow members and the discipline BNI has provided. The discipline at BNI has a big connection with the same sort of discipline I try to instill in my team. This is how we do it:

  1. Follow a particular structure: Every week in our business we have a certain structure that we follow. We connect with a certain number of clients, we have a certain number of appointments per week and we have certain actions that lead to particular outcomes for our clients.BNI does the same thing. Every week we turn up for morning meetings, learn during the 10-minute presentations, constantly look for referrals for people and treat members as we want to be treated.
  2. Stick to your core business: We don’t get sidetracked with issues not related to our core business.BNI emphasises the importance of this in the 60 seconds when you pitch your business and make it clear what you are all about. This is a powerful way for you and your listeners to get a clearer insight into your core business.
  3. Support each other: Our support for each other in the business has been reflected in this most recent award. We work together and support each other to build the business.

This same attitude is shown at BNI. In meetings, we treat people as we would like to be treated and give business, which brings business back to you. It’s the core BNI philosophy of Givers Gain and it has worked for our business.
