A number of people have been asking me how our bee’s are coming along – so I guess that it is time for a quick update. You may recall that we took delivery of our first hive a few months ago now – and that after a settling in period – Kerry came back checked how they were doing and gave us our first sample of honey. Well, we now have two hives – and just before Christmas we were treated to our first taste of home produced, Titirangi honey. Seen below is a series of photographs to give you an idea of what was involved:
The first step was to open up the hive and take out some of the frames. Notice that now the bee’s have settled in – Kerry no longer feels the need to wear protective clothing! Six frames were removed – the frames were scrapped to open up the cells and each frame placed into the centrifuge.
The final stage – draining off the honey. We took delivery of 18Kg of fresh, untreated, organic, Titirangi honey just in time for Christmas – the perfect gift idea.
If anyone reading this is interested in renting a hive of their own – feel free to contact Kerry and see if this is going to work for your area
