You may have read the interview I posted to this blog a few weeks back with Bill Sherman who has a Social Capital blog – Aha Moments. This posting today from Bill is particularly pertinent and I thought that I would take the liberty of sharing it with you all on this blog:
There’s an old saying that good news travels fast but bad news travels faster. In this age, the speed of communications really doesn’t matter–it’s the quality of communications.
When someone reaches out to you with truly great news or horrible news, take a moment to plan your reply. How can you make your response quick and personal? The personal response strengthens bonds.
For example, this week, I shared some really good news with close friends. I sent out a quick individual note by e-mail to each of them. Within moments, my phone started ringing with people who called to congratulate me.
They took my e-mail and strengthened the bond through a real-time call. I went from feeling good to feeling on cloud-nine because people wanted to celebrate that good news with me.
By increasing the human element of your response, you strengthen the bonds between yourself and the other person. Keep that in mind the next time someone shares good/bad news with you. You’ll make a powerful impact.
