A Golden Jubilee for J Tomlinson & Co Ltd, painters

by Colin Kennedy

It is a golden year for J Tomlinson & Co Ltd, which celebrated 50 years of success in May – the family-run business was founded in 1962 by Joe Tomlinson.

Joe began small, painting local schools, but his reputation for a quality finish and premium service spread, and demand for his service quickly grew. Today the company retains its reputation as a “superior painting and decorating service” for homes, schools and businesses.

Steve Salmon joined Joe as the company’s first apprentice in 1968. Now he skillfully leads his team of registered Master Painters, applying his extensive experience, wealth of knowledge and in-depth understanding of the company and industry.

Knowing the tools

Steve attributes the company’s growth to their commitment to high quality workmanship. With directors who have a high level of experience and knowledge that is rarely seen in this industry, Steve says they make sure work is done as it should be.

“I tell the men to do the job right the first time then that way everyone is happy,” he says matter-of-factly.

Clients include St Oran’s College, Waterloo School and Rata School, to name a few.

A team of experts

The elite team of painters is one of the key reasons this company has maintained its top performance for so long. “We have great people, who provide a great service,” Steve says.

Every member of the painting team is a tradesman who began their time with J Tomlinson & Co as an apprentice and they have all stayed with the company for at least 20 years. As registered Master Painters, they all have an in-depth understanding of painting techniques and paint characteristics.

Research and development

Over the years, J Tomlinson & Co. has been actively involved in research and development in the painting industry. One such research project involved the team testing Resene’s new products for them in their early days. The team’s expertise and feedback helped Resene create the extensive range of quality paint products they have available today.

Embracing new technologies

Joe has taken advantage of many opportunities that have come his way to keep his company up to date with the best techniques and products available.

One such opportunity arose in the early days of his business when Joe met a Dutchman whose crew was using a new and efficient device to apply paint – a roller.

Joe knew great new technology when he saw it, and he became the leader in using rollers in the painting industry. This part of the company’s heritage is reflected in the company’s logo, which incorporates an image of a roller.

Commitment to community

Doing their share for the community is something that Steve says everyone in the company is proud of.

One of their biggest projects is supporting Te Omanga Hospice; J Tomlinson & Co Ltd organise the fundraising to cover the costs of painting the hospice and its ongoing maintenance.

Branching out

At the age of 25, Joe’s son Ray Tomlinson (BNI Harbour City Member for 7 years) launched a building washing service, JT Property Wash, to complement the company’s painting service. Since its inception, the business has grown steadily and now operates nationwide. “Current clients include Foodstuffs, Mitre 10, The Warehouse and the Ministry of Justice.”

A golden birthday party

The golden birthday celebrations were held at the BNZ Partners Lower Hutt Business Centre, courtesy of BNZ who have provided the company’s banking services for the past 50 years.

The festivities are set to celebrate not only the hard-working staff but also the company’s clients, whose loyal support has been the basis of J Tomlinson & Co’s success.
