Long term BNI member, Marilyn Bakker is a design and print consultant in the Newmarket chapter of BNI. She has written and published her first children’s book, an adventure story suitable for children 10+ titled ‘Danger at Devil’s Cove’ the Adventures of Josephine Mary Cresswell.
This fast paced 204 page chapter book is set in the 1950’s on the Coromandel Peninsula. The book has been professionally edited by Lynnaire Johnston of BNI Octagon Chapter in Dunedin who is a writer and editor who runs her own marketing communications company, Word Wizard. Lynnaire describes Danger at Devil’s Cove as “a fast paced adventure story with an imaginative edge. It has many levels so can be enjoyed by children from 10 years old plus as well as adults. It perfectly describes the kind of childhood many of us remember, albeit perhaps without quite the same amount of excitement!”
Talented Manukau Institute of Technology students Rueben Horn and Pati Ahsue worked with the author to produce the stunning pen and ink drawings which illustrate the book.
The author gratefully acknowledges Creative Communities New Zealand for its assistance with funding, and Print House Ltd, Messiah Ltd and Word Wizard for their valued contribution to kick-start the first edition of this book and the subsequent website www.marilynjbakker.com.
The books are available from books@marilynjbakker.com and 10% of all sales referred by BNI (please specify when ordering) will be donated to Hospice NZ

Good luck with sales Marilyn,
I have just written my own book on Leadership & Custer Service which has been 3 yrs in the making. With the final draft on my desk to read, if I had not have been crook & needed a debriilator in October, may have had it out before Christmas.
Having said that, perhaps it was meant to be next year.
I would be interested in how sales go thru the BNI networking & Blogs like this.
Best wishes
My regards,
kenn
Hi Kenn
Thanks for your comments. Sorry to be so long responding – I missed your message til now. Good support from my own Newmarket BNI group at a book signing in the city and further orders have trickled in since.
Most sales however are word of mouth and I have found that people enjoy having an autographed copy especially when gifting the book to a special young person in their lives. To date Danger at Devil’s Cove has been accepted by libraries and some schools and the feedback from readers has been very encouraging from all ages from 10 to adult.
Good luck with your book. I recommend having it professionally edited. BNI member Lynnaire Johnston is a very skilled and experienced editor. Google Word Wizard if you would like to know more.
