Some of my earliest memories are of stories being read to me by “grown-ups”… Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, The Good Samaritan, Thumbelina the Witch’s Cat. I still remember the anticipation and excitement of sitting down to hear a good story.
It’s not a pleasure we ever lose.
I still love being treated to a good story and, when a speaker readies himself to deliver one, I still feel that anticipation – and I know that this rings true for probably every single one of us.
Stories are powerful, we know that. They are memorable and they are viral. Stories create buzz. It’s a conversational item. We love relating good stories to friends and families (even the old hairy joke is actually a story with a beginning, middle and end).
Next time you come to giving your 60 second or ten minute presentation, think of one crucial fact you want to communicate to your audience, and then wrap it in a story.
People don’t forget things like that.
