I recently posed a question on BNIonline.co.nz which has so far returned some insightful responses…
The question was: “How do we cultivate a networking mindset?”
The question follows a comment from one of my presidents who said that: “Some people just don’t seem to get it. They receive heaps of referrals but rarely reciprocate”.
In short, ‘How do you get other people’s head in the game?’ and ‘How do you get them thinking like a networker all week long, instead of forgetting about it all until the next meeting?”
Tony Allwood said we should meet one-on-one with a different member of our network every single week. That’s good networking 101 advice.
Sarah Lochead-MacMillan said to change a mindset we need to change the terminology and attitude we use – we’re not networking, we’re connecting.
Jochem Daum said he expects networking behaviour from his suppliers and clients – again, I think that’s good advice, provided you let them know in some way that it is an expectation that comes from doing business with you, and you practise what you preach.

By remembering that givers gain … if you go into any discussion trying to find out what you can give that person you will probe them about their business/issues/successes/failures/etc. By finding this out you will often identify ways to introduce referals for them and they will be more likely to remember you as a person who took away a point point/solved a problem for them
