Does size matter?

by Niki Gunning

I was meeting with the leadership team of one of the chapters I oversee yesterday. They are a strong chapter and at the end of last year sat at 43 members. The conversation yesterday really brought home to me how size does matter when it comes to a BNI chapter.

They have started the New Year with the loss of 3 members, and while still a big chapter, they are really disappointed in this. They’re determined to fill these seats and continue to grow the chapter. It made me think about how different the situation would be if they were a chapter of 20 or less. The loss of 3 members at this level can be, and sometimes is, devastating. It puts a chapter into a vulnerable place, and if the numbers drop below 15, is often the kiss of death.

Attending the meeting of this chapter is so inspiring. Everyone wants to be there and everyone participates in what is a fun and professional meeting. When visitors do come – and they had 2 there yesterday – they want to join. Their conversion rate is very high, as is their retention rate. They have never dropped below 25 members, and so have never experienced the hard work of a chapter in decline. I love it that BNI New Zealand have realised this and are now focusing on getting chapters with a minimum of 20 members. It increases the chances of all members getting good referrals, not just the usual few. It also undoubtedly increases the energy of the chapter and is a lot easier to convert visitors – especially when the numbers are supported by strong thank you for closed business figures. (This chapter passed $1m worth of referrals in 10 months!)

Why not speak to your Director about how to grow so that you can enjoy the benefits of a strong, larger chapter. Remember though, do not sacrifice quality for quantity – grow strong not fast is my mantra.
