United we stand

Cch cathedral-before-after

The earthquake in Christchurch has influenced the way in which we respond to one another, and that response has extended within and beyond the borders of New Zealand.

Assistance has come in many forms, with people thinking outside of the box and giving in whatever way they can.

A substantial amount of money was raised by the BNI community, both here and abroad.

Chapter donations totalled almost $62,294. Although some donations were made by BNI members in their individual capacity, many chapters also benefited from pulling together as a team to generate funds by organising charity events.

BNI New Zealand also added $5,000 to the pot and the international BNI community stepped up to help by making donations to the International Red Cross.

Practical business implications of the quake
A particular need for alternative business premises and facilities was identified after the quake.

BNI members put their hands up and offered practical assistance in ways that, as business owners themselves, they knew would benefit their counterparts.

The BNI network proved most useful, enabling members to notify others of available office space. Even those in outlying areas extended offers to source whatever service or assistance would be helpful.

The implications of moving your business to alternative premises poses various challenges. Again, there were members who anticipated what these would be, and were quick to volunteer help.

For instance Jay Ganda, a Christchurch graphic and web designer, offered free assistance with changing address and contact details on business cards, letterheads and websites to those businesses that were forced to relocate after the earthquake.

Compassion has many
Because we are more than just business owners, offers of help have been made that go beyond what business requires.

Some of these include accommodation made available for those who need to get away, as well as free counselling sessions to de-stress those affected by the disaster..

The indomitable human spirit
Amidst the devastation of the Christchurch earthquakes, it is encouraging to see a business community that refuses to surrender.

While the givers gain philosophy may not be a driver in this instance, it’s difficult to ignore this truism when you witness a nation close ranks.
